Contemporary exterior look - Gulf Harbour
|
Mike Pasco at Regency Designer Homes believes that New Zealand is fast developing its own unique contemporary architectural style – and it's a style that owes a lot to today's contemporary cladding materials. “There's a definite trend towards homes that are clad in a combination of materials. People often come to us with a very definite idea of what they think they want – maybe a plaster finish, or a total weatherboard look. But after we've shown them a range of the recent homes we've built using a combination of cladding materials more and more people are opting for that. “It's a look that is very contemporary and very New Zealand. We seem at last to be moving away from the urge to replicate Tuscan-style villas or other derivative style in New Zealand and we're developing our own style. Looking forward, I'd expect to see more designs influenced by a mixture of aesthetic considerations and climatic practicalities. Wide eaves, single-pitched roofs and low-maintenance cladding like Linea weatherboards are my picks.” This home, built by Regency Designer Homes as a show home at Gulf Harbour, North of Auckland, is a great example of the combination-cladding style that Mike is talking about. The exterior is clad in James Hardie Linea® Weatherboard and Monotek® Sheet, with Wairau stone pillars and corner posts adding visual interest to the front of the property. “We wanted to create a look that was new and on the edge,” says Mike. "This was one of the first homes built using the Linea and Monotek combination and the reaction to it has been really enthusiastic.” The home contrasts flat Monotek sheet surfaces with the strong shadowlines of Linea weatherboards. On the northern side of the house, small panels of Linea have been used to great effect beneath the windows to create a look that is rather like shutters. The shutter aesthetic has also been picked up around the entrance way with small cedar louvres which also provide ventilation. Cedar has also been used on the garage door and the same colour has been picked up and used under the eaves, creating an integrated look. A two-tone colour scheme has been used, with Taubman's Wattyl ‘Cobble' on the Monotek and darker ‘Flint' used on the Linea weatherboards. “Prior to building this showhome we had been building quite a few homes that were completely clad in Linea, but now that people have seen this, almost all the homes we're building are using a combination of cladding materials,” says Mike.
